Ah, Long Island, New York! Growing up, summers were spent on "the island," hanging out with my eccentric aunt, scouring flea markets, and indulging + experiencing authentic Chinese food. Now, as an adult, I find myself returning for the same reasons, but with a deeper appreciation for the arts and those irresistible beach vibes.
Heckscher Park & Museum of Art: Where Culture Meets Nature
First stop: Heckscher Park. This beautiful spot is a delightful blend of culture and nature. Wander through the Museum of Art (free admission ), where you can feast your eyes on an impressive collection, then take a leisurely stroll around the park's pond, home to friendly turtles and elegant swans.
Culinary Delights: A Foodie's Paradise
Long Island is a hidden gem for food lovers, offering phenomenal Chinese, Italian, and Mexican restaurants all within a ten-minute drive of each other. Whether you're craving dumplings, pasta, or tacos, this place has it all. Trust me, your taste buds will thank you!
Long Island Game Farm: A Wild Adventure
For an unforgettable experience with wildlife, head to the Long Island Game Farm. Established over five decades ago, this gem offers face-to-face encounters with a variety of animals, including turtles, deer, and alpacas. The knowledgeable staff make it an educational adventure as well.
Jones Beach:Â State Park
No trip to Long Island is complete without a visit to a beach. Keep in mind Jones Beach is the only public beach/ state park on the island. Within an hour of NYC it brings the city to the beach. We tried to avoid the crowd (even seen on a weekday) and ended up walking to an unexpected nude beach.Â
Keep in mind other local beaches require a resident pass (truly locals only), in certain areas daily passes for non-residents are sold ($35+).Â
Or like us you can tag along with a senior citizen and enjoy really living, at the resident only senior beaches.Â
West Neck Beach: A Slice of Paradise
For a more secluded beach experience, check out West Neck Beach in Cold Spring Harbor. Fun fact: it's a favorite spot of Billy Joel! This beach offers a serene escape from the hustle and bustle, with stunning views and a relaxing atmosphere.Â
Oheka Castle: A Touch of Elegance
Step into a fairy tale at Oheka Castle. This grand estate is not just a luxurious hotel but also a popular wedding venue and filming location. Stroll through the magnificent gardens or take a guided tour to learn about its rich history and glamorous past.
*Taylor Swift filmed "Blank Spaces" here ✨
Vanderbilt Museum: A Journey Through Time
End your Long Island adventure with a visit to the Vanderbilt Museum. This eclectic collection includes marine life specimens, taxidermy, vintage automobiles, and the stunning mansion that served as a summer cottage for the Vanderbilt family. It's a fascinating glimpse into the opulent lifestyle of one of America's most famous families.Â
So, there you have it—Long Island through the eyes of a local. Whether you're here for the arts, the food, or the beaches, there's something for everyone to enjoy. Happy exploring! 🌞
