Adventures in Moody Newport Rhode Island: Classic New England Escape

Ready to dive into a moody, magical escape in Newport, Rhode Island? This charming coastal town is where classic New England meets quirky surprises.

From sunrise strolls along the Cliff Walk, to a tasty seafood scene , Newport is full of unexpected adventures. Whether you’re cruising through history, soaking in ocean views, or hunting for the best lobster roll, get ready to fall in love with Newport’s blend of old-world charm and modern-day fun.

1. The Great Elephant Migration
A magnificent 100 piece traveling outdoor art exhibition, made by 200 indigenous artisans in the Nilgiri Hills of South India to encourage human-wildlife coexistence.  Made from lantana camara, an invasive weed that encroaches on wildlife habitat, each elephant is available for purchase between $8,000- $22,000.  Rumor has it that so many elephants were sold in Newport, there may not be enough left for their NYC migration.

2.  The Cliff Walk
If you’ve ever wanted to take a morning stroll with panoramic ocean views and a touch of history, the Cliff Walk is your go-to. This 3.5-mile path meanders along the coastline, offering breathtaking scenery with a side of grand historical mansions. Sunrise here is pure magic. Don’t forget to take a detour down Forty Steps, a stone stairway that brings you face-to-face with the roaring Atlantic. It’s the perfect spot to feel the power of the ocean up close.

3.  Seafood Heaven
Newport is a paradise for seafood lovers, and we took a deep dive into the local flavors. A standout discovery was Rhode Island-style calamari, which comes with a flavorful twist—garlic butter and hot cherry or banana peppers. On the flip side, we weren't huge fans of the steamers, which require you to peel a shrimp-like tail—more work than reward! Our biggest regret? Not stopping by the Newport Lobster Shack, a local fisherman’s co-op serving up fresh, dockside catches. DM us for our secret list of must-try spots, including the best ice cream and gelato in town.

4.  Free Hop-On, Hop-Off Trolley
Forget the hassle of getting around—Newport’s free trolley service has you covered from 8 AM to 4 PM. This convenient ride will take you to all the hot spots: the International Tennis Hall of Fame, Newport Mansions, Cliff Walk, Belcourt, and First Beach. It’s a stress-free way to see the sights!

5.  Sunset Harbor Cruise
Hands down, the highlight of our Newport adventure. We hopped aboard a Gansett Cruise, appx $40 included a fun hour-long narrated tour of Narragansett Bay and one free drink (cheers!). Watching the sunset over Castle Hill Lighthouse was nothing short of magical. We also took in stunning views of Fort Adams, the House on the Rock, Pell Bridge, and Goat Island, all while ogling the $164 million+ luxury yachts. This is a must-do!

 6. Architectural Gems
Newport is dripping with history and stunning architecture. Don’t miss St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, Rhode Island’s first Catholic parish, where JFK Jr. and Jackie O tied the knot. The stained glass windows are breathtaking. For a touch of old-world glamour, swing by the Vanderbilt Hotel, a historic downtown mansion that mixes regal vibes with modern flair, including a secret bar and a chic rooftop lounge.

7. Ocean Drive
Newport’s iconic Ocean Drive offers 10 miles of dramatic coastline, best experienced on a foggy morning for those extra moody vibes. We made our way to the Safari Room Restaurant at OceanCliff, where the views of Narragansett Bay are as impeccable as the food. They’re open Wednesday to Sunday, from 12 PM to 8 PM, so plan your visit accordingly.

Side Notes:

  • Grocery shopping at A Market in Bellevue Gardens Shopping Center was a delightful find for organic goodies.
  • Parking in Newport can be a real headache—prepare to shell out $50+ per day or keep moving your car every three hours at the meter. Plan ahead!

Newport is a mix of history, coastal charm, and luxurious touches—perfect for a moody New England getaway.
